Subway Sandwiches have launched a loyalty program that is tracked through a mobile app that allows users to collect points and redeem on future purchases. Heather and Brendan are looking at the benefits and costs to businesses on loyalty mobile apps.

 

Europe’s shoppers are using their smartphones for purchases more often with over 60% of retail traffic coming from mobile sales. Brendan talks about how people are using mobile apps because they’re time crunched and want to make things fast and seamless.

 

Canadian Tire is starting to transition their Canadian Tire money program to a mobile platform too that includes their sister companies. Heather details how it works.

 

Finally, all this talk about mobile commerce has us looking to our favourite e-commerce platform, Shopify. As a Shopify partner Heather and Brendan have some great things to share.

Episode 28 - Cats in Hats

Today on The Marketing Podcast, Heather Watson and Brendan Quigley talk about Google Images, the shift to platform publishing, the Bank of Canada’s Easter Egg and Pablo.

 

Google is making it difficult for people to snag images in image search by removing the “View Image” button. Brendan talks about the frustration that this is creating and the challenges image producers are faced with and how this shift impacts end users.

 

There is a shift from publishing on web to publishing on platforms. Heather talks about pushing traffic to your website versus pushing people to third party platforms such as Medium.

 

The Bank of Canada shows that they have a sense of humour with an Easter Egg that was hidden on their website launching the new ten dollar bill. Heather and Brendan have differing views on this; it’s a good debate.

 

Finally, Heather talks about the web app Pablo as a tool she likes to use to rip images and create quick social media graphics.

Episode 27 - A McDonald’s Experiment

The Vero Social Network has had a rollercoaster of a ride in a very short span. Heather talks about how it suddenly became popular and how it became instantly hated in the span of days.

 

A new segment, Heather and Brendan will feature a tool of the trade that they work with. This week, Brendan talks about Elegant Themes, a WordPress tool to make building sites in WP easier for agencies and DIY-ers.

Episode 25 - Crock pot-pourrie

CrockPot brand found themselves the target of some online hate after a popular TV show uses the infamous slow cooker brand as a tool to kill off one of their main characters. Heather and Brendan talk about how CrockPot responded and what it means to have your brand name to be ubiquitous with the product.

 

Wendy’s took their NCAA sponsorship to a new level with a Twitter campaign for March Madness. Heather and Brendan review the campaign and the campaign results and chat about leveraging Twitter audiences and maximizing sponsorships.

 

Next, we talk about the evolution of domain names including inventive spelling and the use of extensions other than ‘.com’. Heather and Brendan take on the rationale a business could use when choosing their domain and that .com is no longer a necessity.

 

Walmart is targeting rich moms with a personal shopping service and stores with no cashiers. They’re letting customers purchase by text and the products are delivered to them within 24 hours and free return pickup. How do small businesses compete? They keep doing what they do really well.
